Time to Think About Trees

~ Consider the many ways trees enhance rural living ~

Windbreak ~ Snow Fence ~ Energy Savings ~ Erosion Control ~ Improved Water Quality

Windbreaks, rows or groupings of trees and shrubs planted near a house, outbuildings, along a road or stream, reduce the effects of wind and snow, increase property values, reduce energy costs and improve water quality.

Well planned, placed and maintained windbreaks can perform multiple functions.

Protect people and animals from cold winter wind by reducing wind velocity.

Reduce moisture loss and soil erosion caused by wind and retain storm water runoff.

Reduce energy costs by reducing cold air infiltrating homes and buildings in winter and cool the surrounding air in summer.

Retain snow to control drifting and, with open spacing, distribute snow more evenly over fields and pastures.

Provide shelter for farm animals and livestock, increasing animal productivity.

Filter dirt and dust particles from the air that would otherwise settle in the house and yard.

Here are a few excellent links on how to design, plant and maintain living snow fences:

Natrona County Conservation District sells seedling trees from conservation grade (12-18") to 5-6' tall each year to encourage the planting of wind breaks, erosion control berms, and living snow fences.  We begin taking orders in November for delivery during the following May.  All seedling trees are sold in bundles of 10 or 25, depending upon size.  Please see the Conservation Tree Sales page for more information.  We also sell groundcover in various widths and thicknesses.
